Singapore Immigration: Entry Visa

To enter Singapore for holiday purposes, you will need a valid entry visa. For citizens of ASEAN (except Myanmar), 30-day social visit pas is provided automatically and for free on arrival. The citizens of the following countries also do not need to apply for visa beforehand:

• United States of America, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Iceland, Luxemburg, Japan, Republic of Ireland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Netherlands, San Marino, Switzerland.
• Countries that are members of the British Commonwealth (except India).

To apply for a visa, your passport must be valid for six months beyond the stay in Singapore. Visa is issued for a one-month period and can be extended to three months, via the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in Singapore. Countries that will require an entry visa for Singapore are:

Procedures
Visa applications can be submitted either at the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or online via Submission of Application for Visa Electronically (SAVE) .


Documents Required

• The original and a photocopy of applicant’s passport bio data page.
• Completed original Form 14A.
• One recent passport-sized colour photograph (to be pasted on the top right-hand corner of Form 14A and must meet the following requirements:
  • Image must be taken within the last 3 months
  • Photograph should be in colour, taken against a white background with a matt or semi-matt finish
  • Image must show full face, no headgears allowed unless they do not cover your facial features
• Completed Form V39A (Letter of Introduction for Visa Application )
• Local contact’s Singapore Identity Card (original and photocopy)
• Other Requirements:
• The applicant and the local contact may be required to furnish additional documents and information whenever it is needed.
• If documents are not in the English language, official translations are required.

After the Submisison

Processing Fee:
A processing fee of S$30 will be collected at the time of submission per application in order to apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass. This fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the application or if you withdraw the application after submission.

Processing Time:
Online submission of visa application will take 1 working day (excluding the day of submission) to be processed.
Other modes of submission may take 4 days to 4 weeks to be processed, so do allow sufficient time for the application prior to your departure.

Extension of Visa:
Those who need to extend their stay in Singapore beyond the Visit Pass granted on entry into Singapore may submit an application for extension of stay online via e-XTEND.
The extension period is limited to a maximum of 89 days from the date of entry.

According to ICA,
“Overstaying is an Immigration offence. If you overstay, you may be subjected to a composition fine or prosecution in Court. Holder of Visit Pass (on a social, business or professional visit; or as a tourist) is not permitted to engage in any form of employment, business or occupation without a valid work pass issued under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (Cap. 91A)”.

Hidden Bars in Singapore

The mention of elusive and private spaces for the higher echelons in society brews images of hidden doors, black suits and ties, and the illicit deals made during the night over lavish cocktails. Big cities are boasting about their increasing extravagant night life locations for high rolling executives, made even more exclusive by the invite-only guest lists justified by their premium prices.

But exclusivity in nightlife is not entirely out of reach for those who know of the right places to search. To make things easier for the party revellers who needs a bit of tuning down from their usual watering holes, we have sussed out a few of the best chill-out bars hidden away in tiny obscure pockets on the streets of Singapore which will all the more make you feel a little special having succeeded in finding them.

Going to a bar doesn’t get more sophisticated and nostalgic than what Night and Day Bar (139 A/C Selegie Road Singapore 188309) has to offer; an art gallery featuring works of local artists on level four, an architecture gallery on the third and a bar on level two. You wouldn’t quite know what to expect when walking up the deliberately preserved marble mosaic tiled staircase which you would find in the kitchens of very old HDB flats and the black and white illustrations drawn onto both walls. You might then sigh with a sense of awe or relief having reached the bar to know that are places where the terms serenity, rustic charm and alcohol still co-exists. Night and Day almost resembles a Manhattan warehouse bar tucked in a multi-level shop house which doesn’t need more than two words to sum up the whole experience: casual and vintage.

28 Hong Kong Street is almost non-existent to most Singaporeans as it takes being “hidden” to the next level. With no signage, advertisements, disallowed media exposure and a no-photography rule, the only way to have found out about 28 Hong Kong Street is through word-of-mouth or a sheer sense of curiosity. The entrance of this “North Korea” of bars is equivocally lit by a single strip of ambient lamp and once you step inside, a tall backdrop of black curtains makes this bar even more evasive. The waitresses will be quick to assign you seats as you begin your night away in seclusion being hidden away from the face of this earth and mixology heaven.

It is no surprise that bars with views in Singapore are usually jam-packed with party-goers during the weekends. There is nothing more enchanting than having a cocktail in one hand and being perched high up on a sky scraper looking down on the breathtaking views of the Singapore city landscape. But the Mad Men Attic Bar (11 North Canal Road, #03-02) like other rooftop bars in Singapore seeks to be unpretentious and casual in its interior as well as customer approach, however it is a little harder to find. Revealed only upon stepping out a tiny elevator in an alleyway at 11 North Canal Road, the bar stays true to its tagline – “Get Merry, Go Mad” – as adopted from its sister bar at Robertson Quay, The Merry Men Kitchen + Bar with a fun and warming atmosphere made as such by its live bands, straightforward cocktails and a really cosy feel.

Immigration Guide for Tourists Travelling to Singapore

Each country has their own legal system, including the immigration process. Here is the general information on Customs formalities and clearance procedures you need to take note of when you're entering Singapore.

RED and GREEN CHANNELS

The Red and Green Channel system are operated at all entry checkpoints to smooth up travellers' arriving clearance. If you are arriving by car (from Johor Bahru, Malaysia), you will see signs that direct you to the Red and Green Channel. These signs are located along the route after immigration clearance. Other passengers arriving from air sea, and land (bus/coach and train) will see the Red and Green Channel signs above the examination counters in the Arrival Hall at the respective checkpoints.

Red Channel: Goods to declare

If you carry any of the items below, you must proceed to the Red Channel: Dutiable or taxable goods exceeding your duty-free concession or GST relief. Controlled or restricted goods. Prohibited goods. Inform the officers if you carry any of the items, and show the item(s) together with its import permit or authorisation from the relevant authorities.

Green Channel: Nothing to declare

If you are not carrying any of the 3 types of goods stated above, you can proceed to the Green Channel. However, the officers may still conduct selective checks in this channel.

CAUTION

It is an offence to proceed to the Green Channel with any goods exceeding your duty-free concession and GST relief. The fine is up to S$10,000 or imprisonment.

Duty-free liquors

If you meet the following conditions, you can get duty-free concession for liquors:

1. You are 18 years old or above;
2. You have spent 48 hours or more outside Singapore immediately before arrival;
3. You have not arrived from Malaysia; and

The liquors are for your personal consumption and not prohibited for import into Singapore.

Controlled goods

Controlled goods mean the items that require an import permit or authorisation form from the relevant controlling authority before they can be brought into Singapore. Please produce the goods and the import permit or authorisation at the Red Channel for clearance. Some of the items on controlled goods list are:

• CDs, DVDs, films, and video games.
• Arms and explosives.
• Medicines and pharmaceutical products.
• Telecommunication and radio communication equipment.
• Handcuffs and nightsticks.

Prohibited goods

Some of the items that are not allowed to be brought into Singapore include:

• Chewing tobacco and imitation tobacco product.
• Chewing gum.
• Cigarette lighters of pistol or revolver shape.
• Controlled drugs and psychotropic substances.
• Endangered species of wildlife and their by-product.
• Firecrackers.
• Obscene articles, publications, video tapes/discs and software.
• Reproduction of copyright publications, video tapes, video discs, laser discs records or cassettes.
• Seditious and treasonable materials.

Located 2 bus stops away from Chinese Garden MRT is Jurong East Sports Complex, one of the largest of its kind in Singapore. Other than offering the usual competitive pool, it also has a lazy river pool, wave pool with storm effects, long water slides and fun fountains for kids.

The best thing of all, visitors can enjoy all this with only $1.50 during weekdays or $2 during weekends!
Probably the only bad thing about the pool is that it's located in Jurong East, quite a bit of walk away from Chinese Garden MRT.

Personally, I will come back for more fun in the water even though I live in the East area of Singapore. The slides alone are such fun after a long stressful day at work.
For those who live nearby, the Complex also offers many activities like gym, martial art classes, football fan club, yoga, etc.

How to get there:
Nearest MRT is Tanjong Pagar.

Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Singapore is the body that is responsible in planning and facilitating Singapore’s physical development. Located in Tanjong Pagar area, the URA office can be reach from Chinatown too.

The first floor of the office is opened for the public and it is the home of Singapore City Gallery, where the miniature models of both downtown Singapore and Singapore as a whole can be seen. The models are done with astonishing details, including areas still in building and areas still in planning If you are familiar with Singapore, it is fun to stand there and find what is where.

If you're not, it is a great props to get familiar with the country and prepare your itinerary! P.S.: If you decided to drop by URA, be sure to visit Maxwell Road Hawker Centre too. The eating place that is located just across the URA building is famous for its chicken rice stall, Tian Tian Chicken Rice.

By bus:
From the city take any bus that will stop at Telok Blangah Road. From there, you may either go to the 3rd level of VivoCity shopping mall, transfer onto our Sentosa Express, or you may take a leisurely stroll down the Sentosa Boardwalk.
Busses that go to Telok Blangah Road are 65, 80, 93, 188, 855, 10, 30, 97, 100, 131, 143, 145, 166

By MRT:
Alight at the Harbourfront MRT station, the south-est point of Purple line.
You will only reach VivoCity, you have to go to the 3rd level of the mall and take Sentosa Express.

On foot:
Once you reach VivoCity Shopping Mall, you can walk to Sentosa through Sentosa Boardwalk, a bridge that connects VivoCity and Sentosa. The entry fee is $1.

Others:
Singapore Cable Car - Visitors may board the cable car from the Singapore Cable Car Station at HarbourFront Tower Two and alight at Imbiah Lookout. But I don't recommend this as it's troublesome and expensive.

SIA Hop-on Trolley - A tourist bus service that will brind you to 23 most popular attractions. The bus will drop by Raffles City, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and covers ethnic districts in Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street. Passengers may hop on and hop off the bus whenever they want.
SIA Hop-on buses operate daily from 9 am to 7.30 pm at 30-minute intervals. Visitors on SIA Singapore Stopover Holiday travel for free and Singapore Airlines or SilkAir passengers pay S$3 for an unlimited day pass. For all other passengers, fares are S$12 for adults and S$6 for children. Tickets can be purchased on board the bus.

Sentosa Rider - Operates 9 am to 10.30 pm daily. One day Pass (Unlimited Rides on both Orchard/Marina routes) is $8.00, while one way pass is $5.00. Pick up points are Orchard (Lobby of Marriot Hotel) and Marina Bay (Lobby of Peninsular Excelsior).

20 Years of Animation: PIXAR Singapore

What is it about?
It is an international exhibition that takes its visitors behind the scences of how PIXAR loveable characters were being born. It also features 300 sketches, paintings, sculptures and storyboards.

When?
2 April all the way to 27 June 2010
The exhibition opens from 10am to 6pm (closed on Mondays except school and public holidays).

Where?
The Annexe, Science Centre Singapore, Jurong East.

How to get there and how much are the tickets?
The nearest MRT station is Jurong East. Busses that stop nearby are buses number 66, 178, 198, 335

Why should you be excited for the exhibition:
Claimed to be the world's largest animation exhibition, it is costing S$1.5 million and the only such exhibition in Southeast Asia. A 3D movie theatre also has been especially brought to the exhibition for the visitor to enjoy the PIXAR animations.
